Why did you choose to be in funeral service?

I wanted to be a part of a profession that allows me to help people celebrate the lives of their loved ones. Being a funeral director and supporting families through a difficult time appealed to me after learning about the healing attributes of the funeral rituals in nursing school. People who grieve in a healthy way have fewer physical ailments and bouts with depression. Therefore, I believe that I can still provide healthcare and empathy, not only by caring for the deceased, but also by assisting the living.

What is the most rewarding aspect of working in funeral service?

I truly enjoy being an integral part of orchestrating a memorable and meaningful occasion in many families’ lives. What a powerful gift to be able to help a family remember and celebrate the legacy of someone they love and that had such a great impact in their lives. I had a wonderful experience with one particular family that had me rent a large bus to transport not only themselves, but also their friends to an out-of-town cemetery. They wanted everyone to be able to spend time sharing stories, laughing, and reminiscing during the drive. I am sure it was a day that they will never forget.

What do you want your epitaph to read?

She made a difference.
